Our local news has been filled with stories about Nia Glassie, a beautiful little girl who was physically abused by her stepfather & his brother and possibly others. She eventually died as a result of the serious injuries they'd inflicted on her. How terrible that this precious little person should endure such horrific treatment! The 2 men have stood trial for her murder and been found gulity.
A Child Cries
a child cries in the night
a tuneless song
each surge of sound
punctuated
by individual blow
she lies limp on the ground
cradling a bloody, pulpy face
eyes swelling shut
they kick her
one last time
laughing when she curls up hard
for a single moment
raging silence
then the tiny heart panics
to beat no more
